Bundeena Photography Day – 28 October 2016

I enjoyed a very pleasant day photographing in Royal National Park at Bundeena with Digi Dave. Rain was forecast, and as we headed out to Bundeena, it looked unlikely it would rain in the next few hours, so we headed out to the sea cliffs at the start of the Coastal Track.

We soon arrived at The Balconies. There were plenty of photographic subjects – wildflowers, the many honeyeaters and other birds darting around the coastal heath. The sea cliffs and rock formations and also the possibility of whales cruising past on their southward migration. Continue reading

Burramoko Head and Hanging Rock Walk – 23-24 October 2016

This was a pleasant walk to the cliffs above the Grose Valley, mainly to photograph the spectacular Hanging Rock.

I caught the train to Blackheath, arrived around 1:30 pm, and then started on the walk. It took about 20 minutes to reach the barrier on Ridgewell Road, and then about another hour to reach the end of the road at Burramoko Head. On the way out, there were quite a few others walkers around – some walking back, some walking out. There was also a lot of wildflowers out – including many waratahs. Continue reading

Sculpture By The Sea – Tamarama to Bondi – 21 October 2016

I arrived at Tamarama a little before sunrise and started to wander around the exhibits. Some were quite interesting. I intended to come back to Tamarama later on, so I could examine them in more detail then. Time to look for a good location for sunrise.

sbts21oct16-21

I started on the Coastal Walkway to Bondi, and the sun soon rose up into a small cloud layer. The atmosphere was quite interesting. I continued along – battling with other photographers for the best positions and trying to avoid the passing parade of joggers out on their dawn run. Continue reading

Kiama Coast Walk – Part 2 – Minnamurra to Kiama – 20 October 2016

I waited only a few days before completing part 2 of this walk – the northern section between Minnamurra and Kiama. It is a shorter section – but one that demands a bit of time to see what is on offer. The weather was forecast to be wet to start and then improving. I think any rain had fallen before I had arrived – but at least there were some nice clouds that made photography more atmospheric.

Minnamurra Head and Stack Island

I arrived at Minnamurra Station about 9:30 am and walked a short way along roads to a park near the Minnamurra River and the start of the walk. Like the southern section, this is signposted – but perhaps not as well. Continue reading

West Head Walk – 19 October 2016

Keith had organised a walk at West Head. He  wanted to go along the Mackerel Trail and then descend to Mackerel Beach and then continue north to Resolute Beach, and next to West Head Beach and finally climbing up to the West head Lookout.

Royal National Park – Northern Coastline

I had recently been on photographic trips to the southern coastline of Royal National Park. It was time to return to the coastline  to the north.

Eagle Rock at Curracurrong

Eagle Rock at Curracurrong

in this section of the park, there is a lot to see at this time of the year. An abundance of Spring wildflowers, a lot of birds, reptiles, the odd marsupial and its a good place to spend the time  looking for whales on their migration south. Continue reading

Kiama Coast Walk – Part 1 – Gerringong to Kiama – 16 October 2016

The coast near Kiama is quite interesting – with some dramatic sea stacks, columnar basalt and blow holes. I heard online about the Kiama Coast Walk and was keen to explore it. The official walk goes from Minnamurra to Kiama and then continues south to Gerringong. It is possible to continue along to Geroa further to the south.

Three key places on the coast walkway are serviced by train – Minnamurra, Kiama and Gerringong. That makes it easy to plan trips. Also there are good resources online that provide some guidance. There is the Kiama Coast Walk brochure available online here (or here) and more information hereContinue reading

The Waterfalls of Box Creek – 12-14 October 2016

David Hufton had suggested a photographic trip to the Boyd Plateau. I always enjoy that area. Some thoughts were to go to either or both of Morong Falls or Box Creek.

bc12oct16-18

We ended up going to Box Creek and spent two nights camped at a delightful campsite above Box Creek Falls. We walked in via an easy ridge from the Kowmung River Fire Trail. We left this road near Gillespie’s Lookout and at first followed a rough road west that followed close to the rim above the Kowmung Valley. We then descended down a rocky spur to Box Creek. On the way we spotted a nice tiger snake – coiled up, but not asleep. But it must have been very sluggish as it was quite cool on the day. Continue reading
