This was an easy walk and a very enjoyable day spent with two other David’s – Digi Dave and David Hufton.
We started at the lookout above Oatley Park, and spent some time photographing some of the parrots and other birds. Then we headed down to the foreshore and followed the nice bush track around a loop around the point. Continue reading
This was my second attempt in recent weeks to try and get some good photographs of Hanging Rock and the cliffs of the Grose Valley near Burramoko Head. My earlier trip to the head had been during very fine weather. Conditions were nice but not atmospheric. This time I walked out from Blackheath in light rain. The forecast for the next morning was “possible mist”, so I was more hopeful.
Like the last trip, it was a pleasant walk out – with a multitude of wildflowers out, including many Waratahs. On the last trip, I thought that most of the Waratahs were looking a little old – a bit past their best. I was therefore surprised this trip to find many fresh ones out. Nice! Continue reading
I spent a pleasant few hours on Monday and Tuesday on the banks of the Cooks River between Dulwich Hill and Canterbury photographing the wildlife.
On the Monday, I happened to bump into Ken, who had come along the week before to photograph the Tawny Frogmouth chicks. He was in the area and had a bit of time spare to he thought it could be spent along the river again. Continue reading
Our group spent a productive two days at Barrenjoey – doing some weeding – mainly in the area near the lighthouse over the weekend.
One thing about Barrenjoey is that we see a lot of wildlife while we are there. Last time we weeded there, we spotted a pod of dolphins, some penguins and a seal resting on the rocks. This time we saw number of raptors including sea eagles and a peregrine falcon as well as a lot of other birds and also Blue Tongue Lizards and a number of different insects. Continue reading
After hearing about the Tawny Frogmouth chcks, some friends were keen to come along and spend a morning photographing them and some of the other birds along the river. So I met up with Ken, Brian and Digi Dave, all with our cameras.
I could not relocate one of the Tawny Frogmouth families. As the chicks get older – they seem to move a fair bit each day when they return close to their nesting site and sleep during the daylight hours. Continue reading
This was another photography trip along the Coastal Track. This time, I started fairly late in the day at Otford and walked north to Bundeena.
The weather was very fine. Perhaps too fine. Quite hot for walking (but there are swimming opportunities) – and not very good light for photography except for late afternoon and very early morning. Continue reading
Two years ago, there were two separate families of Tawny Frogmouths, living in the trees alongside the Cooks River. Both the families were two adults and two chicks. I didn’t see any last year. But, this year, there are again two families, as before. Each with two adults and two chicks.

I spent an afternoon walking along the Two Valleys Track down Wolli Creek between Bexley North and Turrella. I can’t recall walking down the valley at this time of the year before and I was interested to see if any orchids were out.
Early on the walk, I disturbed a rather large and healthy looking Red Belied Black Snake sunning itself on the track. It slithered off too quickly for a photo unfortunately. Continue reading
I had never walked on the Illawarra Escarpment between Stanwell Park and Sublime Point. I had seen a possible walking route with tracks marked on Open Street Maps so knew there was a way to follow. I wanted to see if it was a feasible extension to the Coastal Walk in Royal National Park.
The Coastal Walk ends at Otford, and there is no obvious route from there up onto the escarpment. There is, at the next town south along the railway line – Stanwell Park. On the west side of the platform is the start of the Wodi Wodi Track which climbs up onto the escarpment in two different ways. Continue reading
I enjoyed a very pleasant day photographing in Royal National Park at Bundeena with Digi Dave. Rain was forecast, and as we headed out to Bundeena, it looked unlikely it would rain in the next few hours, so we headed out to the sea cliffs at the start of the Coastal Track.
We soon arrived at The Balconies. There were plenty of photographic subjects – wildflowers, the many honeyeaters and other birds darting around the coastal heath. The sea cliffs and rock formations and also the possibility of whales cruising past on their southward migration. Continue reading
