I was heading up the mountains with a big group to go to the Sydney University Bushwalkers annual christmas walk to the Coxs River. On the way up – we met at Blackheath and headed to the Grand Canyon. In the party were – Albert, Su Li and Brent, Wendy and myself and we were also joined by Kim and Alex on their visit from USA.
I spent two pleasant days canyoning with Bob Sault up in the South Wolgan area. The weather forecast was for rain and storms so we chose canyons with small catchments.
Tigersnake Canyon
On the first day, we set off from the Old Coach Road to Crooked Crevice Canyon. This was a canyon that I had pioneered about 12 years ago with Chris Berwick and David Forbes. It is very close to Tigersnake Canyon and makes a good double. Continue reading
Lately Sydney has experienced an impressive series of afternoon thunderstorms. One just about avery day for the past week or so. I thought that Balls Head would be a good place for some storm watching. It has some good lookouts and nearby are some sandstone caves to shelter in the storm is bad. Some of these caves even have seats in them.
Its only a ten minute walk to get to the headland from Waverton Station. When I arrived, the ground was wet – so at least one storm had passed over. But it looked very black to the north-west and the weather radar indicated that a storm was approaching. So – out with the camera. Continue reading

I remember many years ago visiting Claustral Canyon three times in as many weekends. The purpose was to try and get some good photographs of the canyon. A few weeks realiser I had looked down this bit of coast from Barrenjoey. Despite being very developed it looked worthwhile exploring – so I decided to walk this section of the Coastal Walk.

I got up early. It was forecast to be a hot day and I wanted to at least start in cooler conditions. So half past five train to Wynyard and then the L90 bus to Palm Beach. The bus leaves from Railway Square and I was surprised to find it very full by the time it got to Wynyard. I had to stand for about twenty minutes till it got to Dee Why. Continue reading
I went down yesterday to the Cooks River with my camera. I cycled along the river between the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands and the Tempe Wetlands.
The most interesting birds I photographed were these little Dusky Moorhen chicks that were swimming and foraging with their parents at Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands. Continue reading

I was heading up the mountains with John, Chuin Nee and Jasper, on our way to Ian Brown and Tom William’s slide show of their recent climbing trip at Greenland. On our way we stopped off at Glenbrook for a walk to Grey Hat Falls and the Crayfish Pool in Kanuka Brook. According to this link, the waterfall was named in 1970. It is also sometimes referred to as “Tin Hat Falls”. The pool below the falls was named the “Crayfish Pool” sometime later.
It is possible to visit the falls on a short walk from the Red Hands Cave fire-road, but we were keen on a longer walk, so we started from the NPWS Visitor Centre. We walked down to the Causeway and then along the track up Campfire Creek. The we continued up the creek via the Link Track and then climbed up to the Red Hand Cave fire-road. Next we walked a kilometre or two along the road to the track down to Kanuka Brook. Continue reading
I joined a group of friends for the annual ride over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The ride is a celebration of cycling and a protest at the lack of facilities for cycling. For example, recent announcements of NSW Government infrastructure spending does not include any funding for cycleways.
We started the ride from Hyde Park, and after a loop through the city we went over the Sydney Harbour Bridge to North Sydney. Continue reading
Bob and myself finally completed this nice walk. It had been on our list to do for a fair while – and we had set off with it in mind – but thought it wise on those occasions to do an alternative trip because of bad weather.
The walk is around the cliff line of the Radiata Plateau. There is currently a conservation campaign to prevent development of this plateau and have it renamed after a local pioneering conservation – as Elphinstone Plateau. The plateau does have quite a few radiate pines growing on it, but there are some rare plants – such as the Pherosphaera fitzgeraldii — the Dwarf Mountain Pine, which is found in some of the gullies off the side.
