Wentworth Falls Waterfalls – 9 March 2013

Comet Spotting

The last month or two has been a good time to look for comets.

Two have been visible. Comet Lemmon has been quite faint – but I managed to photograph it on a vey dark night with clear sky at Newnes on the Friday evening of a canyoning trip. I didn’t know I had photographed it till I got home and looked at my photos on a monitor. Continue reading →

Leura Cascades – after the rain – 2 March 2013

During the week there had been a fair bit of rain – so it was a good opportunity to head up the mountains and photograph some waterfalls. Leura Cascades was a nice place to visit.

This time I headed straight from Leura Station directly to the Cascades. The tracks were a bit wet – but the cascades and waterfalls were in great condition. I wandered down the track slowly, pausing many times to set up my tripod and take lots of photos.  Continue reading →

Hornsby Daywalk – Waitara and Berowra Creeks – 24 February 2013

It had been a wet weekend – other activities had been cancelled. But on Sunday morning the weather didn’t look too bad so I headed up to Hornsby and walked down to the Great North Walk Track near the Fishponds.

My main objective was to spend some time photographing some of the creek features that I had seen on a previous walk from Thornleigh to Hornsby. The area near the “Spa” – a creekbed feature in Waitara Creek was particularly interesting. I was hoping that recent rain would have put the creek up and made things a bit different. Festival of Canyons – 16-17 February 2013 – Visits to Claustral and Geronimo Canyons

The Festival of Canyons is an annual event organised by UTS Outdoor Adventure Club. The club invites other university clubs and keen canyoners to a weekend of canyoning and socialising. This year, the Festival was held at Mt Wilson. Ellen Braybon was the organiser for UTSOAC.

Canyoning at Newnes – 9-10 February 2013

It was Dan’s birthday and he had organised for a big group to join him in celebrating at Newnes in the Wolgan Valley.

Both days of the weekend we visited nearby canyons. On Saturday, we broke into smaller groups and visited Newnes Canyon. This starts with a 20m abseil into a tunnel – the “Amazing Wallaby Tunnel“. Tunnels in sandstone canyons are fairly common but the one in Newnes Canyon goes for several hundred metres. We had to use headlamps to get through.  Continue reading →

More Summer Canyoning

The weather forecast for last weekend was not the best for canyoning. Rain on Friday night and then two cool days. But the Blue Mountains offers a great diversity of canyon experiences and it is not too hard to choose canyons to suit whatever conditions nature provides.

On Saturday, an old friend Doug, had invited me to join him and a few other friends, Dave and Nick for a day of canyoning. Our original plan when the forecast was for cool weather was to visit South Bowens Creek – Upper Section, which has no abseils or swims, and perhaps only one deep wade. But given the local rain we decided it was unwise and instead headed west into the Gardens of Stone to visit one of the dry canyons there. Continue reading →
