I had an interesting day in the Lane Cove Valley. I started out at Ferndale Park at Chatswood, where I checked out the fungi. Then I continued down the track along Swaines Creek to the Lane Cove River and then along the riverside track towards Epping Road. Along the way I stopped to photograph a nesting pair of Eastern Osprey.
At Ferndale Park, a fair bit of fungi was out. I did find some waxcaps, although not as many as I was hoping for. Here are some –
I also found one of the Ferndale Park Waxcaps. These start off green and then slowly change to pink. They seem to be a member of the genus Humidicutis. See the top photo.
A fair bit of other fungi was out however.
At one spot, there were many clusters of this beautiful yellow coral fungus out (Ramaria lorithamnus) –
For more pictures of the fungi and their identification see this page on my website.
I then continued down to the Lane Cove River. Peter Woodard had told me about a local pair of nesting Ospreys. I soon found them, perched at their nest on a high lamp post at a sporting field.
I was able to get some photos as one flew off.
It headed up the river. I walked upstream a bit to see if I could see it catching fish. I hadn’t gone far when I saw it flying back. I could hear a lot of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos were trying to drive it away. But I later saw in my photos that even though the Cockatoos were making a racket, it was some Ibis that were harassing it.
When I returned to the nest site, Peter Woodard was there taking some photos, and then another bird photographer, Fatih arrived. he had been watching the pair for a few years and gave me some tips on where to watch out for them fishing.
