Wolli Creek and Cooks River Walk – 22 October 2022

Valerie had been on the earlier Greenway Bird Survey, and during morning tea, we talked about an afternoon walk down Wolli Ck. So we met on the bus to Bexley North and started down the Two Valleys Track.

We had no fixed plans to walk all the way along the creek and then back up the Cooks River. We just set off to see what we would find.

At Illoura, we saw a large group of Australia white Ibis on the grass. Unusual for this spot.

I had been monitoring a large nest for a while, and this time it had a Rainbow Lorikeet sitting on top of it. Perhaps just using it as a perch?

As we walked, we could hear a lot of small birds, but they were reluctant to appear in the open. Here are a few –

New Holland Honeyeater

Laughing Kookaburra

One bird we did see a lot of where Red-whiskered Bulbuls

And lower down, wet did see a number of White-browed Scrubwrens

Here is some rubbish in the Bray Avenue Wetlands –

I guess this must have washed down in recent floods. Perhaps the creek needs some pollution booms?

Below Girrahween Park, another White-browed Scrubwren –

At their camp, we watched the Grey-headed Flying Foxes for a while.

Here is a mum with her baby attached –

A few more with babies –

And some more males –

All the way along the path we had seen the Privet flowering in profusion –

We had reached the junction with the Cooks River. At Gough Whitlam Park, we stopped off for coffee, and then looked at the Tawny Frogmouth nest.

The male sitting on the nest seemed pretty restless, so perhaps he is sitting on a chick.

Nearby were a pair of Grey Butcherbirds getting food for their three hungry chicks –

And further upstream near the Golf Course, a hungry juvenile Magpie calling for food –

The White-faced Heron was hunting n small pond –

And we checked out the Bruce St Tawny Frogmouth nest. There is at least one chick, probably two –

Nearby was this Australasian Figbird

And Valerie spotted the female Tawny Frogmouth. It was perched close to the nest.

It had been a nice day out. Thanks to Valerie for company along the way.
