Coastal Walking – Cape Solander – Cape Baily – 15 October 2022

It was beautiful weather and I was keen to head outdoors, so I decided to catch a train to Cronulla and then a bus to Kurnell and visit Kamay – Botany Bay National Park. My plan was open – to walk to Cape Solander via the Yena Track, then walk south along the coastal cliffs. If I felt like it I would continue to Cronulla, or I could walk back to the bus stop at Kurnell.

It was so nice, once I was on the cliffs, that I decided that I should maximise my time there – so I walked south to Doughboy Head and returned the same way.

The Flannel Flowers were stunning. Some of the best displays I have seen I think (OK – no where near as stunning as the display of pink Flannel Flowers back in early 2021). The white Flannel Flowers always seem to attract a range of insects. Continue reading →

Nurragingy Reserve – 14 October 2022

I spent another nice day at Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside.

On these visits, I always aim to find and photograph the Azure Kingfishers. But again, I missed spotting them despite a lot of looking. I did see a pair of Sacred Kingfishers, and a lot of other nice birds. But I did not see many small birds this time, and I did see quite a few turtles. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 13 October 2022

Another visit to Malabar Headland – with the principal aim to photograph the local Peregrine Falcons, and also to look for whales and other sea life. This time I was accompanied by Valerie and Sue.

Upper Blue Mountains Heritage Walk – 12 October 2022

This was a nice day out in the Upper Blue Mountains – looking for heritage sites. The party was Bob, Doug, Pete and myself.

During the day we examined a most interesting Aboriginal site – an occupation shelter, which had ochre and charcoal art, as well as a curious rock engraving, and lots of stone tools. We also looked at the remains of two old buildings. And the wild flowers and scenery were also impressive. Continue reading →

Wolli Ck and Cooks River Walk – 11 October 2022

After the Mudlarks bird survey, I went looking for a Tawny Frogmouth on its nest in Ewen Park. After finding it, I headed to Permanent Avenue and caught a bus to Bexley North. From there, I made my way down the Two Valleys Track to The Cooks River, and then walked upstream to Illawarra Road.

Coastal Walking and Bird Watching – South of Watsons Bay – 10 October 2022

I travelled to the city and caught a ferry to Watsons Bay, then visited The Gap Bluff. From there, I intended to walk south along the Coastal Path.

Visit to Long Reef – 9 October 2022

I was invited by good friends John and Chuin Nee to accompany them and their two sons, and another family on a visit to Long Reef. The weather was fine and the tide was low in the early afternoon – so it looked like a good opportunity.

Birds at Barton Park – 7 October 2022

During the current wet spell, a lull in the rain was forecast on Friday morning, so I took advantage of it and headed out to Barton Park. It turned out to be a fairy fine morning. I could see rain approaching fro the west on the radar, and headed home when it got close.
