Homebush Bay Ride – 18 April 2020

I decided to ride out to Homebush Bay again. This  is a nice ride, virtually all on cycleways, and there is a lot to see along the way. It was once a very regular ride that I would do. I would ride out after work during the daylight saving season, out to Homebush Bay, and around the foreshore to Blaxland Riversie Park, then across the bridge and ride around the  north side to Meadowbank, then across the cycleway bridge to Rhodes and return along the Cooks River Cycleway. That loop was about 50 km. A nice bit of exercise.

These day, the ride takes a bit longer, as I carry a camera, and look for places to stop and photograph. Continue reading

Birds at Barton Park – 17 April 2020

I did a nice exercise bike ride – along the Cooks River Cycleway to Tempe, then along he cycleway to Barton Park with a photoshop, then out and around Muddy Creek to Botany Bay, a visit to the Fish and Chip shop for lunch, then a ride back with another stop-off at Barton Park.

On the way out, I stopped for short break on the cycleway on the Princess Highway at Tempe to photograph a Great Egret doing some fishing. The bird seemed to be catching small shrimp like animals. Continue reading

Bola Creek Walk – 16 April 2020

This was a repeat of the walk I had made from Waterfall about ten days earlier, down the Couranga Track to the Hacking River, then around the Forest Path to Bola Creek, a quick look for fungi, then the walk out.

Hygrocybe roseoflavida

Other areas, I had been to in recent days had a reasonable amount of fungi out, and it looked like more rain had fallen recently at Bola Creek that the other places. The walk down was very pleasant. A hot day was forecast – but it turned out to be relatively cool and overcast. I saw no other walkers on the track down to the river, and then a few others on the Forest Path. At Bola Creek – There was a couple out taking photos of the fungi. Continue reading

Sassafras Gully Walk – 15 April 2020

After recent exercise walks, I was keen to check out more fungi while conditions were favourable. I decided to make a visit to Springwood. That would allows me to complete a nice walk through Sassafras Gully.

Humidicutis taekeri

This turned out to work out fine. I travelled in a virtually empty train, and then set off for the track. Along the way, I did encounter quite a few other parties out walking – mainly quite large family groups, but there was plenty of room to move well off the track. On my walk, I filled the track down from the end of Sassafras Gully Road, then walked down to Glenbrook Creek, and along that and out via Magdala Creek and Fairy Dell. Continue reading

Lane Cove Valley Walk – 14 April 2020

This was another exercise walk – along the Lane Cove River from Thornleigh to Browns Waterhole (and a bit beyond), and then out to Eastwood via Terrys Creek. Along the way I found a fair bit of fungi out.

Here are some that I found along the first bit of the walk, along the Lane Cove River – Continue reading

Fungi at Ferndale Park – 12 April 2020

I went to Ferndale Park at Chatswood for my exercise break. This enabled me to have good walk in bushland, and also look for any fungi that was out. The area was starting to dry out, so more rain is needed for more fungi to appear.

Here is some of what I found – Continue reading

Wolli Ck Walk – 11 April 2020

This was another exercise walk along Wolli Ck. This time I caught a bus to Earlwood and walked down through Girrahween Park, then I headed upstream mon the Two Valleys Track to the Illoura clearing, before returning back to Girrahween Park, and then I continued to Turrella Reserve and to Tempe and then along the Cooks River path to home.

I was on the lookout for birds and fungi – but did not see too much of either. Here is some fungi – Continue reading

Cooks River Walk – 8 April 2020

My exercise walk was a short walk down to the Cooks River and then a short loop before returning home.

Lots of people were also out exercising, and it was good to bump into friends Cindy (and her daughter and partner) and later Valerie, also out for some exercise. I took my camera and photographed a few birds. Continue reading

Birdwood Gully Walk – 7 April 2020

Another exercise walk, and a little further afield, was to Birdwood Gully at Springwood. Again I travelled up on virtually empty trains and met few people on the track. It also allowed me to look for fungi.

I was pleased to spot the pink coral fungus growing again in the valley. This is the only place I have seen it. No one seems to know its name, so it is probably undescribed. Here is a closer view – Continue reading
