Grand and Jugglers Canyons – 14 November 2019

The forecast was for a warm day, but not a heatwave. Blue Mountains National Park had been closed due to a catastrophic fire forecast, but that closure was due to end at midnight the day before. Bob and myself headed up the Mountains with the intention of visiting Jugglers and Grand Canyons.

However, when we headed out to Point Pilcher Road, we found a barrier closed and sign saying the National Park was closed. After an unsuccessful phone call, we drove around to Evans Lookout Road. There we found no barriers or park closed signs, so assumed the park staff had not had time to open the barrier on the other road. So we set off from the Grand Canyon carpark above Neates Glen. Malabar Headland – 11 November 2019

While the juvenile Peregrine Falcons are still around, its worth making visits to see them at Malabar Headland. This visit was on a fairly windy day, and that seems to have made the Falcons more active – flying and interacting. But also, as they get older, they are ranging further away from their home area near their nest ledge. Also, like their parents, they can spend long periods of time perched on ledges and patience is required.

Northern Beaches Birds – 10 November 2019

Birds at Tempe, Barton Park and the Cooks River – 9 November 2019

Blue Mountains Heritage Walk – 7 November 2019

The week before, I had been on a walk wth Bob looking for Aboriginal heritage sites in the Blue Mountains. On that trip, we had started with a lot of hope, but had met no success. It was now time to have another look for the same site – an art cave – but from a different start point.

Where we looked this time, was a fair way from the previous week’s location, and this time we did not use a possible grid reference, but instead followed my choice for likely location based on a few clews we had from an earlier party to visit it. I was quietly confident that I had decode the clues and now knew the location. it all seemed to fit. But its different out in the bush than in front of the computer looking at maps and air photos. Like the week before, it was another very hot day, and it was quite enervating climbing out of gorges and walking along scrubby ridges. And, like the week before we had no success. Chinese Garden Visit – 6 November 2019

One place I had never visited in Sydney was the Chinese Garden in Darling Harbour. I recently had the opportunity when catching up with an old bushwalking friend, Jodie, and her young daughter.

These gardens are very beautiful and certainly a very peaceful place. Entry costs only a few dollars. There is a number of paths to follow that twist around pools and thickets of trees and bamboo. Continue reading →
