Vaucluse to South Head Walk – 11 March 2024

This was a pleasant walk with the National Parks Association of NSW, and led by Brian Everingham. The plan was to catch a bus from Edgecliff to the Grunpy Baker, and then after morning tea, visit the nearby cemetery and then walk along the coast path to The Gap, and then visit South Head before heading home via ferry.

I had not visited the South Head Cemetery before, and it proved to be a very interesting place. Continue reading

Birds at Long Reef – 10 March 2024

I headed up to Long Reef for an afternoon of bird photography. The tide was fairly low, so I was able to venture out onto the rock platform.

One aim was to photograph some of the local Ospreys. I did see a few (or perhaps the same one multiple times) – but noe of them we’re hunting in the area. Continue reading

Fungi at Bola Creek – 9 March 2024

I joined the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc for their first fungal survey of the year – which was held at Bola Creek in Royal National Park. In the lead up, conditions had been quite dry and consequently not that much fungi was observed.

But with the keen observers along, we did find some interesting species. Continue reading

Extensions to Wolli Creek Regional Park – 8 March 2024

Good news! The NSW State Government has announced some parcels of land has been added to Wolli Creek Regional Park. I attended the announcement press conference at Turrella Reserve (part of Wolli Creek Regional Park).

Barton Park Birds – 6 March 2024

This was another morning spent in the local area. This time I visited Barton Park. The water in the main pond at Landing Lights Wetland was very low – and so I was on the lookout for Dotterels. I did see a single Black-fronted Dotterel. But I also saw five Sharp-tailed Sandpipers.

Most of the photos are taken at Landing Lights Wetland. Continue reading

Cooks River Birds – 5 March 2023

I decided to do walk down part of the Cooks River and then walk back the same way. I started from Illawarra Road and walked as far down as the Tempe Wetlands, and then I returned back to Illawarra Road.

Here are some birds I saw along the way – Continue reading

Thirlmere Lakes Walk – 4 March 2024

I joined Brian Everingham and party from the National Parks Association of NSW for a nice walk around the lakes at Thirlmere Lakes National Park.

The walk around three of the lakes is easy and certainly very beautiful through a range of different ecosystems. Continue reading

Sassafras Gully Fungi – 3 March 2024

I did a trip by myself to Sassafras Gully at Springwood to see how the fungi was going. This time I started by going along the track behind the shops, down Magdala Creek. I continued to Glenbrook Creek and walked upstream to the Lagoon, where I stopped for lunch and a swim. Then I exited via the track that goes to Sassafras Gully Road.

The fungi was not super abundant, but it was quite reasonable for so early in the fungi season. Continue reading

Claustral Canyon – 1 March 2024

It was great to visit Claustral Canyon again. Bob had suggested the canyon and conditions looked good, so we set off up the mountains and were soon on our way.

It turned out to be an excellent day. There was a good flow of water through the canyon – which made it more spectacular. Continue reading
