Fungi and Birds at Birdwood Gully – 29 February 2024

Sue joined me for a very pleasant day at Birdwood Gully at Springwood. The forecast was for a very hot day, so we headed up early and were soon in the cool rainforest of the valley.

We had a very pleasant time looking in the leaf litter for fungi, and we found some very nice ones. Continue reading

Cooks River and Tempe Birds – 28 February 2024

I was keen to get outdoors, so did a walk along the Cooks River, staring at Illawarra Road, and walking down to Waterworth Park. Then I crossed the river and walked under the railway line to the Princes Highway. I finished my walk by visiting the Tempe Wetlands.

Here are some birds I saw along the way – Continue reading

Central Coast Birds – 26 February 2024

I travelled by train to Wyong, and then walked out to the wetlands on McPherson St (Tuggerah). The aim was to look for some Black-necked Storks that had been seen there recently. Thanks to bumping into fellow birders Jenny and Rodney, we soon spotted two Black-necked Stork chicks. While we were there we did not see the parents.

On the way to the wetland, I spotted some White-breasted Woodswallows. Here is one – Continue reading

Terrys Creek Walk – 25 February 2024

I was keen to revised the Terrys Creek area to see if certain fungi was out. And iff the fungi was poor then I would be able to find some birds to photograph.

Like my last trip, I walked down to the creek from Epping Station. When I reached the creek, I first walked upstream along the track on the true right bank. I was looking for Powerful Owls, but did not spot any. There was some fungi out however. Continue reading

Greenway Bird Survey – 24 February 2024

The highlight this survey was spotting a Leaden Flycatcher.

Conditions for photography were very bad with a heavy cloud cover. But at least it did not rain. Continue reading

Oronga Canyon and the Arch of Serendip – 23 February 2024

Bob had been keen on a trip to visit Oronga Canyon for a while, and it had been a very long time since  I had been there (2002), so we travelled up the Bells Line of Road and were soon  walking along the ridge towards Wongarra Hill. We were following a climber’s track.

It was pleasant walking. A very hot day was forecast – but conditions up the mountains were mild. Continue reading

Wolli Creek Visit – 21 February 2024

Rainfall data had shown a reasonable fall of rain at Marrickville Golf Course, the crest weather station to Wolli Creek Regional Park, so I thought I would pop over to see if any fungi was out.

It turned out very little fungi was out.

I started from Girrahween Park, and walked upstream first, a bit past Paperbark Creek, then returned and walked back down to Girrahween Park and a bit downstream along the Two Valleys Track, then returned back to Girrahween Park. Continue reading

Birds at Barton Park – 20 February 2024

This was a morning trip to Barton Park and Landing Lights Wetland. Not that many birds were active – but the mosquitoes near the wetland certainly were. So I did not stay near the pond or in the mangroves for very long.

Walking from the bus stop, I saw this White-faced Heron in Riverine Park – Continue reading
