Birds at Long Reef – 6 April 2025

I have been visiting Long Reef quite regularly lately, and no wonder, it has been a very good venue to photograph Ospreys.

This visit was no exception, there were plenty of Ospreys (and some quiet times), and also some other nice birds. It was low tide when I arrived so I could venture out on the rock platform. Here is a selection of photos – Continue reading

Wolli Creek Fungi – 5 April 2025

This was a field study of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group. The participants met at Girrahween Park and then after a briefing, set off to what fungi could be found. Conditions were quite dry and so not that much fungi was out, and a lot of what was found was in poor condition.

Kamarah Canyon – 4 April 2025

Bob and myself had planned to visit this canyon a bit earlier in the year on a trip where we would first visit Koombanda Canyon, and then exit by reversing Kamarah. But on the planned day, the weather was cold and wet so we did something different. So now we just planned to visit Kamarah Canyon, and start off from the top.

I had visited the creek once before, in 2002, and Bob had also visited it, but right back in 1976. So it was time for another visit.

Bob parked on Bells Line of Road, as we were soon walking down the climber’s track to Bell Supercrag. Along the way, we turned off the track, and walked down to a saddle and then into the creek near a major bend. Continue reading

Birds at Nurragingy Reserve – 3 April 2025

Sue joined me for another day at Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside.

Compared to other recent visits this turned out to be relatively quiet. We did bump into friend Roger Lembit there and he probably saw better birds than we did, including some raptors.

Here are some of the birds we spotted – Continue reading

I thought it about time to check out what fungi was around at Birdwood Gully at Springwood. So I caught a train up the mountains and was soon walking down the track from Boland Avenue.

The fungi was reasonable. Here are some that I spotted – Continue reading

This was another walk led by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW. The main aim was to check out the new track from near Chowder Bay to Middle Head.

Most of the party met at the wharf at Circular Quay and travelled over on the ferry to Taronga Wharf. Then we set off along the track. Continue reading

A Wet Walk in Dharawal National Park – and Beyond – 30 March 2025

Brian Everingham had put a walk on the activities program of the National Parks Association of NSW to Dharawal National Park. The plan was to head into the bush and photograph some wildflowers – particularly Banksias.

But, on the day for the walk, the weather was not the best, but this did not deter the party of Brian, Valerie, Ken, Helen and myself. We fist visited Maddens Falls. Continue reading

A Few Local Birds – Cooks River and Barton Park – 28 March 2025

The weather was not the best – with some rain, but I ventured out after the rain stopped for a walk along part of the Cooks River, then I caught a bus to Barton Park. I was on the lookout for birds, but perhaps due to the rain, it was relatively quiet. Certainly quiet compared to other recent visits to these places.

Here are some of the birds I saw along the Cooks River. Continue reading

Bantry Bay – Looking for Aboriginal Art – 27 March 2025

A wet day was forecast, so I suggested to Bob that rather than head up the mountains, that we do a walk in the Bantry Bay area, and while there we could look for some Aboriginal sites. I knew about an engraving site near the Wakehurst Parkway. Bob did some research and found there were other sites nearby that sounded well worth looking for.

For rock engravings, they are often a lot easier to discern if the rock is wet. Sometimes we have used a water bottle and poured water over part of a rock platform and magically an engraving has appeared. But if it is raining, then you don’t need to add water.

We had light rain for the first part of our walk, then a bit more later on. Continue reading
