Back to the Art at West Head – 27 December 2023

My friend Valerie was keen to see some of the abundant Aboriginal art on West Head, and I was more than happy to make another visit. We had a great trip despite some stormy weather.

There are many tracks and fire roads that lead off from the main road on West Head. Aboriginal art sites can be found along many of these.

We parked at one car park, and were soon on our way along a fire road. Continue reading

Christmas Post – Hazelbrook – Waterfalls, Orchids and Birds, and a few Birds at Ellalong 24 – 25 December 2023

On Christmas Eve, I travelled up to Hazelbrook to stay at my sister and brother in law’s place. Then on Christmas Day, we headed to Ellalong  in the Hunter Valley to join a family get together.

I had my camera with me. At Hazelbrook, the rain cleared for long enough for me to visit the local waterfall circuit walk, and also snap some birds around the house. Continue reading

Wolli Creek Birds – 23 December 2023

In the afternoon, after the Greenway Bird Survey, I thought I would check out more local birds. This time at Wolli Creek Regional Park. I caught a bus to Earlwood, and walked down to Girrahween Park to first see how the Tawny Frogmouth nest was going. I had spotted the nest on my previous visit to Wolli Creek.

I was delighted to see the male on the nest accompanied by two chicks. Continue reading

Aboriginal Art Sites at West Head – 21 December 2023

The weather forecast was not the best, so instead of canyoning, Bob and myself decided to do a walk on West Head in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to look for Aboriginal sites.

We found most of the Aboriginal sites we were hoping to see. Many are well known and marked on maps. Continue reading

Rookwood and Cooks River Birds – 18 December 2023

I made a visit to Rookwood Necropolis again to see how the young Brown Goshawks were going, and then on the way home, I got off the train at Canterbury and walked home via the Cooks River. This made for a pleasant outing.

This time, at Rookwood, it took me a while to spot the juvenile Brown Goshawks. I listened for their calls and looked in the usual trees that I had seen them perched in before, but had no luck. I wondered if they were spending more time away from their nest area. This is to be expected as they develop. Continue reading

As usual, I joined the annual Sydney University Bushwalkers Walk to the Coxs River. This walk has been held in mid December for many years.

I travelled up the Mountains to Megalong with Roger, an old friend, and we were soon walking down the Six Foot Track. Continue reading

Visit to Taronga Zoo – 14 December 2023

I joined Sue and Valerie for a very pleasant day at Taronga Zoo.

On my last visit, with Sue, we had spent a fair bit of time in the new nocturnal house. Valerie had not yet seen it, so that was one place we wanted to make sure we visited. So, when we arrived, we walked down to it via the Australian section. Continue reading

Jugglers and Grand Canyons – 14 December 2023

A very hot day was forecast – and it seemed a good time to visit some canyons in the Blue Mountains. So Bob and myself headed up to Medlow Bath and visited Jugglers Canyon and then Grand Canyon.

We had a great day.

After parking near the airport, we were soon on the old Pilcher Track heading to Jugglers Canyon. It didn’t take long to reach the first abseil. Continue reading
