I took part on the Wolli Creek Bird Survey, early in the morning. The group surveys from Girrahween Park down to the Flying Fox Camp and back. It was quite cold, and not that many birds were seen, although quite a few could be heard.

Here are some of the birds we saw –

I visited two reserves at Chatswood to photograph fungi. I first went to Ferndale Park, and then, after lunch, went to Blue Gum Reserve. Both venues had some reasonable fungi, including a good number of waxcaps.

Mooney Mooney Aboriginal Site, The Mega Cave and More Rock Art at Brooklyn – 5 June 2025

Bob and myself had a very interesting trip in the Gosford – Brooklyn area. We visited a major Aboriginal engraving site, then visited a huge sandstone overhang, and then found a few more Aboriginal sites, then we headed to Brooklyn for another Aboriginal engraving site.

The first site, the Mooney Mooney Aboriginal engraving site is a short walk from the Old Pacific Highway, not far from the Reptile Park at Gosford. It is an amazing site! Continue reading

Sassafras Gully Fungi – 2 June 2025

I was keen to check out what fungi may be present in Sassafras Gully at Springwood. I caught an early train to Springwood, and was soon walking down the track at the end of Sassafras Gully Road. I ended up walking to the Lagoon at Glenbrook Creek and then down to the junction of Magdala Creek, and then to Springwood via that creek.

I was hoping to spot some unusual waxcaps, and I did find a few, although perhaps not as many as I was hoping to find.

Here is some of the fungi I spotted along the walk – Continue reading

Aurora in Sydney? – 1 June 2025

I had been watching the Aurora forecast, and it seemed to be quite reasonable for change of seeing an aurora in Sydney. But I was busy editing Osprey photos and time passed during the evening. So I probably headed out far too late in the evening.

I walked to Marrickville Park and set up my camera and tripod. In the photo above, you can see a glow. Is it an aurora or sky fog or just light pollution. I am not sure, but the glow is restricted to the south. And it was a clear night with plenty of stars visible. The photos were taken about 10:30 pm. The aurora seemed to be best around 8:30 pm. Ospreys at Long Reef – 1 June 2025

I thought it was about time to head back up to Long Reef to hopefully photograph the local Ospreys again. Conditions were reasonable and I had a good day. There was high tide most of the day.

I arrived at the lookout about 10:30 am and ended up staying till almost 4 pm. There were a number of other bird photographers there during the day, including Celine, Sarath and Simon.

I soon spotted two Ospreys perched in a dead tree on the north side. As I started walking there, one took off and flew my way. Continue reading

More Lane Cove Valley Fungi – 31 May 2025

I was keen to head back to a location in Lane Cove National Park to look for more of the waxcaps I had seen two visits earlier. Again, I was hoping that more may have emerged from the soil. But like my last trip – I could not spot any.

But I had a nice walk from Macquarie Park to Turramurra.

Here is some of the fungi I saw along the way. Continue reading
