Three Gorges Bike Ride – 20 July 2013

After reading a report on the Cycle Atlas Site about this ride, I thought that it had been a long time since my bike had been out that way and it was about time to do it again.

The ride is a loop that starts from Hornsby or nearby and visits Galston Gorge, Berowra Waters and Bobbin Head. On my old website it is ride 4.1 Continue reading

Glenbrook Gorge – 14 July 2013

I headed up to Glenbrook once again to try and obtain more photographs of Glenbrook Gorge. My previous visit (and here) had been rewarding but Glenbrook Creek was very low and the water looked quite polluted.

This time, I found the water level much higher and the pools were very clear.

The entrance to the national park is about a ten minute walk from Glenbrook Station and then it another ten minutes or so down to Glenbrook Creek at the start of the Gorge. Continue reading

Barrenjoey – Cliffcare – Bush Regeneration – 13 July 2013

Stu had organised a group of rock climbers to head out to the cliffs of Barrenjoey to spend a morning weeding – removing bitou bush and asparagus. This was one of series of weekends that Stu had organised with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to help with bush regeneration.

Barrenjoey is a popular place for rock climbing. This was the first time I had been out there for weeding. Continue reading

Karloo Pool – Uloola Falls – Kangaroo Ck Walk – Royal National Park – 12 July 2013

“Kanangra” had suggested this walk on the Bushwalking Forum. I met up with Digi Dave at Heathcote and we set off down the track to the Karloo Pool.

When we arrived, we found there was a huge party of children there, some of them swimming in the pool. The water sure looked cold. We took a few photos and then headed off towards Uloola Falls. Continue reading

Woronora Walk – Waterfall to Heathcote – 10 July 2013

It had been a long time since I had been in this area. One place I hadn’t been to for a very long time was Kingdom Come on the Woronora River. I wasn’t even sure I could remember the way there.

I started from Waterfall and walked to the start of the Bullawarring Track and followed the track down to Heathcote Creek. The track continues past some nice pools. The best of these was the Kingfisher Pool. Above the pool are some attractive cascades. The top one flows down a hole into a tunnel to emerge lower down. Very interesting. Continue reading

Wolgan – Capertee Divide Walk 6-8 July 2013

Martin had organised this walk for UTS Outdoor Adventure Club and had invited me to join him. Andres was also on the walk. He had planned to go for three days along the divide between the Wolgan and Capertee Valleys.

We parked at the Donkey Mountain car park on the Newnes Road. Instead of using the style to cross and fence and head up to Donkey Mountain, we went the other way. Crossing a small creek and climbing up onto the top to the north. Continue reading

Castle Head and Mt Solitary Walk – 1-3 July 2013

This was a two and half day walk. I arrived at Katoomba at 2pm and walked out to Narrow Neck. It took about an hour to walk out to the barrier and then about another 40 minutes to walk out to Castle Head.

CHMS 6

The turn off track leaves the Narrow Neck fire trail about 1km from the barrier. It is the third turn off to the left. The first is a track marked by a duck (cairn) that goes to a nearby lookout. The second turn-off is an old road that goes a short way up a hill and is blocked by metal posts. The third turn off, the one  to Castle Head, the one to take, is marked by a couple of wooden posts.  Continue reading

South Lawson and South Hazelbrook – Waterfall Walk – 30 June 2013

It had been raining for a couple of weeks and the creeks were up. A good time to visit some waterfalls. As I left home, it was  raining and the same on my return, but up in the mountains it was a fairly fine day – with even a little sun!

SLH 13

After a visit to the Lawson Cake Shop, I headed down Honour Avenue to the track to Adelina Falls. The falls are only a few minutes from the road. There was plenty of water going over the falls and it was time to pull out the camera. Winter is a bit of a gloomy time – and the light was a bit restricted. Continue reading

Colo River – Early Canoe Trip

Time to record some of a conversation I had with an interesting old gentleman that I met in Glenbrook back in the late 1970’s. At the time, I had been going around a variety of different groups and organisations showing a slide show of the scenic features of the Northern Blue Mountains as apart of a campaign to have the region declared a national park.

I’m not exactly sure who the group was in Glenbrook, but they seemed to enjoy the slides and appreciate the issues. I was having a cup of tea and chatting with people when I was introduced to a “Major Collit”. A quite old gentlemen. He had an old photo album with him and then proceeded to tell me about some of his adventures back in the 1920’s.

He had been in a party that had gone into the Colo Gorge back in about 1928 and set up a camp in a large cave on the River. I think they had reached the river from Mountain Lagoon. As well as carrying in a lot of food, they had also taken in a lot of old rectangular metal drums. At their cave base, they then proceeded to turn the drums into kayaks by cutting them up and then soldering them together. From the photos – it looked like the soldering irons were simply heated on a big fire.  Continue reading

Uloola Falls and Karloo Pool – Royal National Park – 15 June 2013

This was a pleasant walk from Waterfall to Heathcote via easy tracks and fire trails. On the way I visited Uloola Falls and Karloo Pool.

UlFalls 5

My walk started at Waterfall Station following a track (mainly fire trail) to Uloola Falls. At the falls is a campsite that is nothing special – it looks a bit worn out. I wonder if it is used much? The falls themselves are quite impressive. The creek tumbles over in a series of drops. It is possible to climb down to the bottom on either side of the falls. I tried to find some good places for photographs. Continue reading
