Wolli Creek – Fungi and Orchids – 15 June 2024

In the morning, I had visited Sydney Park to see new stinkhorns. In the afternoon, the rain seemed to be easing, to I decided to visit Wolli Creek Regional Park for an update on the fungi. I was hoping to see a lot of new fungi after the recent rain, but the fungi was pretty much the same as what I had observed on my last visit.

Fungi at Sydney Park – 15 June 2024

It was raining, but it looked like there may be a few breaks, so I headed to Sydney Park to see if any new stinkhorns were out. When I arrived, I headed down to the gardens near the  new toilet block – they had been refreshed recently with wood chips. I found many Stinkhorns – but they were from only two species. I also found some new Birds Nest Fungi.

Lane Cove River Fungi – 14 June 2024

This was a return visit to check the status of the Parrot Waxcaps, that I had seen earlier, located in rainforest near the Lane Cove River.

My previous visit had been on the 5th of June, and I had only found a single one of the Gliophorus psittacinus group waxcaps then. It was an old specimen. On this visit, I was pleased to find quite a few fresh ones. Continue reading →

Bundeena to Marley Walk – 13 June 2024

I was able to join Brian Everingham on a walk he led for the National Parks Association of NSW. I travelled down to Cronulla with Valerie on the train, and then we caught the ferry to Bundeena where we met Brian and the rest of the party – Ken and Elaine. The weather was overcast and there was a strong cold wind. The sea was very rough.

But the weather did not dampen our spirits for the walk down this fantastic section of coast. There was a lot to see. Continue reading →

Greenway Bird Survey – 12 June 2024

The morning after the Mudlarks Cooks River Bird Survey is often the Greenway Bird Survey. I met the group at Taverners Hill Light Rail Station at 7:30 am.

This survey was fairly quiet – and not that many birds were observed. Perhaps due to the cold morning. Continue reading →

Birdwood Gully Fungi – 10 June 2024

The day before, I had visited Sassafras Gully on the north side of Springwood. This time I was with my two sisters, and we did a bushwalk down Birdwood Gully, which is on the south side of the town. I pointed out some of the fungi that was there, and then stayed a bit longer to take photos.

Sassafras Gully Fungi – 9 June 2024

I was heading up the Mountains to visit my sister at Hazelbrook (while my sister from Tasmania was visiting). On the way up, I broke any journey at Springwood and visited Sassafras Gully to see how the fungi was going. I entered the valley via the track at Sassafras Gully Road and exited via the Wiggins Track.

I found a reasonable amount of fungi, including some interesting and rare species. Here is some – Continue reading →

Fungi at Bola Creek – 8 June 2024

I attended the field study of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group at Bola Creek in Royal National Park.  Over twenty people attended and this included members of the group, visitors and also members of the Friends of Royal National Park.

In the lead up, there had been a lot of rain, and Bola Creek itself was quite high – so we did not attempt to cross over to the other side along the track, a place where we often find very good fungi. But despite this, we still managed to find a good amount of fungi on the day. Here is a selection of what we found – Continue reading →
