This was a pleasant walk with the National Parks Association of NSW, and led by Brian Everingham. The plan was to catch a bus from Edgecliff to the Grunpy Baker, and then after morning tea, visit the nearby cemetery and then walk along the coast path to The Gap, and then visit South Head before heading home via ferry.
I had not visited the South Head Cemetery before, and it proved to be a very interesting place.
There seemed to be large number of Celtic Crosses –
And the graves of quite few notable people –
This one is the grave of Sir John Robertson, a former Prime Minister (premier) of NSW and was one of the politicians responsible for the creation of Royal National Park.
Here is the crypt of the Foy family. Mark Foy, the retailer and former owner of the Hydro Majestic Hotel at Medlow Bath would have been entered here, rather than his intended grave at “Marks Tomb” a large boulder near the Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath.
Nearby is is a memorial to Juanita Nielson, who vanished in very suspicious circumstances. She was a Foy family heiress.
We then set off along the coast path.
Here is the Macquarie Lighthouse –
The Signals Station –
World war II gun emplacement –
We are now getting close to The Gap –
And the view from The Gap –
We then head past the old navy officer’s mess towards Camp Cove.
Camp Cove
And then along the track to South Head.
Here is one of the lighthouse keeper’s cottages.
This is another gun emplacement.
Horny Lighthouse was having a makeover. The concrete building on the left was a WWII building for the searchlights for the battery.
More gum emplacements.
And then back at Camp Cove –
We stopped for refreshments at Watsons Bay before catching our ferry back to the city.
Many thanks to Brian for putting on the walk.
