More Raptors at Malabar Headland – 10 August 2018

I made another trip to Malabar Headland National Park with the main goal to see if I could spot the raptors I had seen on previous trips again. I was successful in this.

I walked out from Maroubra Beach to the National Park entrance and then out along the Track first to Magic Point. I walked slowly passing to photograph birds, but one of the first subjects was a legless lizard found by two walkers just in front of me. It was at a sandy part of the track and seemed to be having trouble getting up off the sand back into the bush. After a few photos, I found a small stick and used that to carry the lizard a few metres and deposit it into the scrub. Continue reading →

More Birds at Centennial Park – 7 August 2018

Two weeks earlier, I had visited Centennial Park on the lookout for some birds. A friend Ken Grittiths had posted some nice photos on social media, including some unusual ducks and a number of owl species. On my visit I had been completely unable to spot any of these birds. The week before, Ken and accompanied me on a trip to Malabar Headland, and he had offered invite me to join him at centennial Park on his next visit. So when the offer came, I was happy to join him.

Blue Fish Point on North Head – 5 August 2018

I had recently made a few trips to the area near South Head and to Malabar Headland, and seen quite a few raptors, so thought a trip to Blue Fish Point on North Head may be a good place to look out for these birds. It gives a good view of the cliffs of North Head.

The only time I had been to this point, was on a trip, where our party had descended down off the headland using a fishermen’s route then traversed the rock platforms and talus to under Lady Fairfax Lookout. We had then climbed up some very dodgy fishermen’s ladders up to the top. Continue reading →

Nature at Oatley Park – 4 August 2018

Having nothing better to do on a Saturday, I headed down to Oatley Park with my camera. It had been a while since I had visited the area.

I walked there from Mortdale Station and entered the area via Lime Kiln Creek. I first checked out the ponds of the wetlands. Not many birds out. So I then headed along the track on the western side.  Continue reading →

Back to Tempe Wetlands and Tempe Reserve – 3 August 2018

I had visited Tempe wetlands four days earlier, but that visit was the last part of a walk down Wolli Ck and I dint spend very much time in the area. So I decided to go back – starting early in the day.

Nurragingy Reserve – Birds – 2 August 2018

More Honeyeaters from Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park – 1 August 2018

I returned to the Chiltern Trail at Ingleside to attempt to get better photos of some of the Honeyeaters I had seen on my previous trip. On that occasion, I had got a nice series of photos of Spotted Pardalotes taking nesting materials into their nest hole, and I had seen a lot of honeyeaters – but only had poor photos of some of them.

Malabar Headland – More Birds and Whales – 31 July 2018

Another trip to Malabar Headland. I was keen to return after photographing Kestrels and Peregrine Falcons on my last trip and well as some close ups of breaching whales. This time I was joined by Ken Griffiths, who is a very good nature photographer (See his website here). Ken is also an expert on frogs and reptiles – and is able to often spot these creatures in places I walk past.

We met at Central and caught a bus to Maroubra and then set off along the track to Magic Point and the Boora Point. Continue reading →

Wolli Creek and Tempe Wetlands – 30 July 2018

It had been a while since had walked down Wolli Creek. At this time of the year I normally am on the lookout for fungi, but it has been so dry recently that I thought in most unlikely that I would see any, so I had my bird camera ready instead.
