Fungi at Birdwood Gully – 2 May 2023

Valerie joined me for a very good day of hunting for fungi in Birdwood Gully at Springwood. Good weather was forecast  and we had pleasant journey in the train to Springwood. Then we crossed the highway, and were soon on the track down Birdwood Gully.

I was on the lookout for waxcaps. Would there be a lot to after the recent rain? a few days before there had been about 45 mm of rain recorded on the gauge at Faulconbridge. Continue reading →

Nurragingy Reserve – 1 May 2023

I was keen to head back to Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside for some more bird photography. I had a very pleasant day wandering around the park.

The birds I saw and photographed on this visit were quite different to those on my previous trip. I did see an Azure Kingfisher – but only for a short time. The birds I saw the most of were perhaps Rose Robins. Continue reading →

The Ghosts of Girrahween Park – 30 April 2023

A few days earlier, on our walk down Wolli Creek, we had noticed some Ghost Fungi – Omphalotus nidiformis in Girrahween Park. I thought it would be worth returning in the evening to see them glowing. They are a species that is bioluminescent.

It was a pleasant evening, so I jumped on a bus heading to Earlwood. On the way, I contacted Valerie and she decided to join me. We met at the park and also bumped into Andrea and two of her friends who were also photographing the mushrooms, and later Deb joined us. Continue reading →

Fungi at Wolli Creek – 27 April 2023

I joined Valerie and Sue for a short excursion to Wolli Creek Regional Park. We were looking for fungi. We started from Hartill-Law Avenue, and first walked along the Two Valleys Track upstream. We did not go too far – I wanted to see if some fungi had appeared at certain places along the track.

Sassafras Gully Fungi Walk – 18 April 2023

This was a very pleasant day out – an outing with Valerie and Sue around the full circuit of Sassafras Gully.

After catching a trian to Springwood and then a coffee stop, we entered the gully via the track down to Fairy Dell and followed it along Magdala Creek to Glenbrook Creek, then walked upstream to The Lagoon and out via the track to Sassafras Gully Road. This was an fair walk with quite a few stops to look for fungi and other things. Continue reading →
