Malabar Headland – 18 June 2024

I headed out to Malabar Headland by myself and spent the day out near Boora Point. I was looking for whales, dolphins and peregrines.

I managed to get a few brief glimpses of a single Peregrine Falcon during the afternoon. But neo whales or dolphins. During my visit, the sea was very rough – and that may have been why the whales were keeping underwater or hard to detect. Continue reading

Blue Gum Reserve Fungi – 16 June 2024

I had not visited Blue Gum Reserve for a while, and I was pleasantly surprise with the abundance of fungi that I found in a small area near the main track.

But I first looked in a lower area near to the creek – well off the track. Here I found a big cluster of Gliophorus graminicolorContinue reading

Wolli Creek – Fungi and Orchids – 15 June 2024

In the morning, I had visited Sydney Park to see new stinkhorns. In the afternoon, the rain seemed to be easing, to I decided to visit Wolli Creek Regional Park for an update on the fungi. I was hoping to see a lot of new fungi after the recent rain, but the fungi was pretty much the same as what I had observed on my last visit.

Clavulinopsis amoena Continue reading

Fungi at Sydney Park – 15 June 2024

It was raining, but it looked like there may be a few breaks, so I headed to Sydney Park to see if any new stinkhorns were out. When I arrived, I headed down to the gardens near the  new toilet block – they had been refreshed recently with wood chips. I found many Stinkhorns – but they were from only two species. I also found some new Birds Nest Fungi.

Pseudocolus fusiformis Continue reading

Lane Cove River Fungi – 14 June 2024

This was a return visit to check the status of the Parrot Waxcaps, that I had seen earlier, located in rainforest near the Lane Cove River.

My previous visit had been on the 5th of June, and I had only found a single one of the Gliophorus psittacinus group waxcaps then. It was an old specimen. On this visit, I was pleased to find quite a few fresh ones. Continue reading

Bundeena to Marley Walk – 13 June 2024

I was able to join Brian Everingham on a walk he led for the National Parks Association of NSW. I travelled down to Cronulla with Valerie on the train, and then we caught the ferry to Bundeena where we met Brian and the rest of the party – Ken and Elaine. The weather was overcast and there was a strong cold wind. The sea was very rough.

But the weather did not dampen our spirits for the walk down this fantastic section of coast. There was a lot to see. Continue reading

Greenway Bird Survey – 12 June 2024

The morning after the Mudlarks Cooks River Bird Survey is often the Greenway Bird Survey. I met the group at Taverners Hill Light Rail Station at 7:30 am.

This survey was fairly quiet – and not that many birds were observed. Perhaps due to the cold morning. Continue reading
