Malabar Headland – 9 September 2019

One more pleasant day spent out on Malabar Headland. Again, my aim was to photograph the Peregrine Falcons. This visit they were reasonable active and during my time there, one brought back two dead birds – presumably to feed young chicks. That is good news.

On my way out, I photographed some Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. I noticed later when looking at the photos that one of them had a type of backpack. Perhaps a GPS tracker? Continue reading →

Birds at Barton Park – 6 September 2019

This was a nice afternoon visit to Barton Park and the Landing Lights Wetland. It had been a sunny morning, but the afternoon was overcast and the light was quite poor for photography.

In the Landing Lights Wetland there were the usual Pied Stilts and various ducks. There was also a White-faced Heron and a Little Egret. The Egret was quite busy hunting for small fish. Continue reading →

Birds at the Chiltern Trail and Warriewood – 5 September 2019

This was an interesting day of bird photography  at two locations in the northern parts of Sydney. First I visited the Chiltern Trail at Ingleside (and in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park), and then on the way home I made a stop at Warriewood where I visited one of the sporting fields.

The Chiltern Trail is a good place to photograph Honeyeaters, and that was one of my aims. I have also had some success in photographing Spotted Pardalotes there. On this visit, I did find a few Honeyeaters, but my photographing the Pardalotes was quite different to what I expected. Continue reading →

Engadine to Audley and Return Walk – 4 September 2019

This was another very pleasant day in the bush on a walk in Royal National Park led by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW. At the present time, there is an amazing display of wild flowers in the bush near Sydney. Its well worth getting out.

After meeting at Engadine Station, we set off along the track towards Kangaroo Creek. In the party, as well as Brian and myself were Roger, Sue, Valerie, Trish, Helen W, Pat, Alan, Diane, Margaret, Helen D, Esther and Hildegard. Our walk to the creek was punctuated by a lot of photo stops. There were lots of beautiful flowers to enjoy, and this included many species of Orchids. Continue reading →

Birds at the Northern Beaches – 3 September 2019

I spent a few full day at the Northern Beaches visiting a number of sites, and in particular nesting sites of raptors.

I first travelled to Manly Vale in the B-line bus, and walked to  sporting park where a pair of Eastern Ospreys have a well established nest. As I was approaching the nest, one of the birds flew off and landed on the grass and grabbed a stick. It flew back and added it to the nest. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 2 September 2019

I spent another day out on Malabar Headland. My main aim was to photograph the resident pair of Peregrine Falcons.

I walked out fairly early towards Boora Point. On the way, there were not many birds out. At the Falcon nesting area, I spotted one of the Falcons sitting on a ledge and managed a few photos before it flew away to a ledge out of sight (the nest site). I then met David, another bird photographer that I had met before at Oatley Park and on my previous visit to Malabar Headland. Continue reading →

Photographing Powerful Owls and Owlets 21 – 28 August 2019

On a previous visit to Bob’s house at Cheltenham, one of his neighbours, Steve, had taken me down to see the nesting site of a pair of Powerful Owls. I now had another chance to visit – Bob and told me Steve had visited the nest site that morning and the male Powerful Owl had a possum clutched in his talons and that he would most likely feed the chick in the nest hole that evening at dusk.

So I travelled up to Cheltenham, called into Bob’s place for a cuppa and then walk down the street to meet Steve. He arrived with another bird photographer, and we set off the short way to the nesting site. On the way, Steve pointed out the male owl with the possum. Continue reading →
