Ferndale Park – Fungi and Slime Moulds – 24 October 2018

After seem recent rain, I thought it would be worthwhile to visit Ferndale Park at Chatswood to see if any fungi or slime moulds were out.

Birds at Tempe Wetlands and Reserve – 23 October 2018

It was the week of the Aussie Bird Count. I was taking part this year as a member of the Tempe Birdos. The bird count sessions take 20 minutes, and I recorded the birds I saw on an app on my phone. I did two sessions at the Wetlands and one at the Reserve.

Malabar Headland – 22 October 2018

I made another trip to Malabar Headland National Park. I had not planned to go so recently after my previous visit, but the weather forecast was not suitable for the alternative trip  – so I decided to revisit Malabar Headland. One motivation was to see if the young Peregrine Falcon chick was now flying.

In contrast to the previous visit – no whales or seals. But the Peregrine Falcons were a lot more active and I was able to photograph both the parents and their chick. The chick was away from their clifftop nest area – and was thus able to fly. Continue reading →

Taronga Zoo – 20 October 2018

I had been a while since I had visited the Zoo, and also possible thunderstorms had been predicted – and I thought the Zoo may be a good place for some storm watching if a thunderstorm passed over the city. And there is also plenty of shelter at the Zoo if it does get really wet.

But visiting on a weekend also meant large crowds of people, but this wasn’t a major problem. Here are some of the photos from my visit. First some honeyeaters – Regent Honeyeaters, a Blue-faced Honeyeater and a Striped Honeyeater. Continue reading →

Ingleside, Irrawong and Warriewood Birds – 19 October 2018

I spent an interesting day in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney photographing birds. I travelled by train to Gordon and they caught a 197 bus to Ingleside. I then walked out to the Chiltern Trail.

It was relatively quiet. I was after honeyeaters – but not too many were around, or if they were they were quiet. Here are some birds I photographed – a New Holland Honeyeater, A Eastern yellow Robin and a Fairy-wren. Continue reading →

Malabar Headland – 18 October 2018

Kangaroo Creek Walk – 17 October 2018

Earlier in the year I had walked down Kangaroo Creek from Waterfall Station to the Karloo Pool, then walked out to Heathcote. On that trip the waterlevel was extremely low – the creek and the waterfalls along the way were hardly flowing, so I wanted to return when there was more water around.

Leura Waterfall Walk – 14 October 2018

A wet day was forecast in the mountains. This means it is a good time to do another waterfall walk. I was visiting my friend Wendy, and we thought a walk visiting some of the waterfalls near Leura would be good.
