Taronga Zoo – Visit on 2 June 2018

I was joined on this visit to the Zoo by Digi Dave. We spent a day photographing the animals.

It was quite windy on the day with threatening rain, so we concentrated on the animals that were indoors – the Nocturnal House and the Reptile House. Here are some photos from the Nocturnal House –  Continue reading

Royal National Park – Bola Ck and Bonnie Vale – 1 June 2018

Digi Dave and myself headed down to Royal National Park for a day of photography. We started at Bola Creek to see if any fungi was out.

Armillaria sp

It was very dry at Bola Creek – the driest I have ever seen the area I think. Not very much fungi could be found. We took a few photos and a tried out a focus stacking sequence or two – but the subjects were not very interesting.  Continue reading

Birds at Bicentennial Park – 31 May 2018

I spent an interesting day wandering around Bicentennial Park at Homebush Bay photographing the birds.

It was a bit windy on the day of my visit – so there were not too many birds out. In the big pond there were the usual Avocets and Stilts, a few black swans and ducks. Continue reading

Vivid 2018 – Sydney’s Light Show – 30 May 2018

I made a visit to Vivid in Sydney on a Wednesday evening. I arrived at Circular Quay before the lights were turned on and made my way onto the Cahill Expressway to start getting some photos.

It was not too crowded on the night – at least at first. But more people seemed to arrive as time went on. After getting some photos from the Cahill Expressway I descended to the Quay and then travelled to near the Passenger Terminal for photos of the Opera House. Continue reading

Birds at Tempe Wetlands – 29 May 2018

I spent a few hours at Tempe Wetlands looking for birds – but with only limited success. Not that many birds seemed to be out compared to my previous visits. Perhaps I was there a bit late in the day on this visit? (around 10:30 am to 12:30 pm).

Yellow Faced Honeyeater

Anyway I did manage to get a few photos on nice birds. Here are some –  Continue reading

Mt Victoria Great Train Weekend 26 – 27 May 2018

I spent an enjoyable weekend at Mt Victoria with friends John and Chuin Nee and their two sons Jasper and Sebastian. We were there to see and hear steam locomotives. It was a weekend celebrating 150 years of railways at Mt Victoria.

A huge crowd had gathered at Mt Victoria for the weekend. Some had come up by Intercity Train, some by car, and some in vintage carriages hauled up by an old steam locomotive. Much of the activity was in the park – with many stalls and events. And a lot more nearby at the station.  Continue reading

South Coast Photo Trip 21 – 25 May 2018

David Hufton invited me to join him on a photo trip to the south coast of NSW based around Mystery Bay near Narooma. This is country that I am not very familiar with and it was a great opportunity to see some wonderful country at a relaxed pace allowing plenty of time for photography.

I met David and travelled in his car down the coast. We eventually reached the town of Narooma where we called into the tourist office. One brochure we got which was very useful was on sites of geological significance in the area. From Narooma it was only a few more kilometres to Mystery Bay. We then drove to the campground and set up our tents. David said that the campground can get very full in summer, but on our visit it was nice and quiet.

Mystery Bay is an interesting place with a fascinating history. As its name says, there is a mystery here. It is the  story of a visiting geologist, Lamont Young and 4 companions that vanished without trace in 1880.  Continue reading

Tempe and Cooks River Birds – 20 May 2018

I spent a very interesting day along parts of the Cooks River looking for and photographing birds. I started out by cycling to the Tempe Wetlands.

I was on the lookout for honeyeaters – but I did not find all the species I had seen on my previous visit. Here are some that I did find –  Continue reading

Birds at the Tempe – 17 May 2018

I spent a very worthwhile morning wandering around the Tempe Wetlands and surrounding areas photographing the birds.

Nutmeg Mannikan

One remarkable thing was the number of birds flying from south to north overhead. They seemed to be honeyeaters. Perhaps a mixture of Yellow Faced  and White-Naped Honeyeaters. Continue reading
