This was another trip to check out the Parrot Waxcaps (Gliophorus psitacinus var. psittacinus) that are found in a small moist area along the Lane Cove River. I found them still out, a bit drier, but not that much different from my previous visit. I also photographed some fo the interesting coral fungi that is found in the same spot.

I spent an interesting day looking for fungi at Coachwood Glen with Liz Kabanoff. Conditions were quite dry and we had to search very thoroughly to find what we did. Coachwood Glen is just off the Megalong Valley Road, not too far from Blackheath.

I was intending to make another visit to Malabar Headland National Park to photograph the Peregrine Falcons and the passing whales, but the eastern part of the park was closed due to a Shooting Festival at the adjacent rifle range. So instead, I caught a bus up to the Northern Beaches.

I made my way to the sea cliffs, to a spot where I had seen Peregrine Falcons in the past. Where they back and ready to breed. It looks like the answer was yes. I spotted one sitting on the cliffs. I waited to see if it would take off. It seemed pretty settled, then another Peregrine Falcon flew past. The first one then took off. Continue reading
Like the day before, I made a second visit to a small section of the rainforest along the Lane Cove River to check out how some fungi had changed and also to get more photographs for some of the other fungi nearby.
This time I wanted to further observe the Parrot Waxcaps, the ones we think are Gliophorus psittacinus var. psittacinus. In the past, I have seen them change to a yellow-orange colour. I don’t think they had changed that much, some had dried out. Continue reading
I made a second visit to Wolli Creek, mainly in order to see how some of the fungi had changed – in particular the Humidicutis viridimagentea. I was expecting to have changed to a magenta hue. When I checked the specimens, I found some had changed slightly, others have dried out a fair bit, and some seemed much the same. There was one fresh one.

I joined the filed activity at Mill Creek on the Hawkesbury River with the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc. Conditions were not great – it had not been very wet in the lead up, but we did find some interesting fungi.

This was an excellent fungi spotting trip. I caught the metro to Macquarie Park and then walked to Lane Cove National Park. I followed the Riverside Path to the weir near the Park Visitor Centre. I crossed on the weir and then started up the track up Blue Gum Creek. I followed the creek to the scout hall, then walked a a short bit of road that took me to Ferndale Park for a lot more fungi. Then I finished by walking the short distance to Chatswood Station.

It had been a while since I had walked along the track at Wolli Creek to check out the fungi. I had hopes there may be some out after recent rain. I started at Bexley North and then walked down the Two Valleys Track to Tempe with a number of side trips.
I did not find huge amount of fungi out, but I did spot some interesting species. Along the upper part, before Bardwell Park, the fungi was fairly poor. I spotted a few mycena growing on logs, and a few little brown mushrooms growing in the soil but not much more. Continue reading
I spent a pleasant two days on a camping trip in the Gardens of Stone with a group of friends. The party was Don, Elata, Rik, Digi Dave and Myself.
We drove out onto the Newnes Plateau to our intended camping spot, parked and set up our tents and then set off down a fire trail to a nearby lookout. It was a good spot overlooking the gorge of Carne Creek. We climbed various pagodas to get different views. Continue reading
I spent a very rewarding day out on Malabar Headland. It was the whale season so I hoped to observe a few whales, and I also hoped to see the pair of Peregrine Falcons that are nesting in the sea cliffs.
The birds started off even before I entered the National Park. Near the fence, a Fan-tailed Cuckoo was in full call. A beautiful bird. Continue reading
