More Aboriginal Art on West Head – 4 July 2024

With more wet weather forecast, Bob and myself decided on another visit to West head to continue looking for Aboriginal sites.

Wet rock platforms make the often very faint engravings much easier to discern. So that was a good reason to visit the headland again.

We started off near where we had finished on our previous visit. We had only found one small engraving of a kangaroo at the last area we had visited on that day (see above photo). We knew there was a lot more  to look for. Continue reading →

Fungi near the Lane Cove River and Blue Gum Reserve – 2 July 2024

I visited two places on the day – first visiting a site near the Lane Cove River to check the status of the Gliophorus psittacinus group waxcaps. Then I headed to Blue Gum Reserve at Chatswood.

First, the Parrot Waxcaps. Here are ones I photographed on my previous visit. Back then they were fresh. Now they are quite orange in colour. Continue reading →

Fungi in Birdwood Gully – 1 July 2024

I traveled up to Springwood with Sue, and after a coffee stop, we walked down into Birdwood Gully to see what fungi was out after the recent rain. We found a fair amount but things were a bit washed out.

Here is some what we found – Continue reading →

Birds at Sydney Park – 30 June 2024

In the afternoon, I decided to visit Sydney Park. A Pacific Baza had been seen there recently, but it seemed likely that it had left, but also, an Australian Hobby had been seen at the Park that morning. So it seemed like the right time for a visit.

As soon as I walked into the Park, I spotted the Australian Hobby. It was about 30 m away on the grass. Continue reading →

Fungi Update – Wolli Creek – 30 Jun 2024

In the morning, I visited Wolli Creek Regional Park for a short visit – mainly to check out how the fungi was going. It was not that different to my previous visit the week before.

Ramariopsis crocea

This was the first fresh one I had seen for a fair while. I hope more appears. Continue reading →

Aboriginal Art Walk – 28 June 2024

Bob and myself decided to head up to the Blue Mountains and walk out along a ridge to looks for some Aboriginal sites. It was to an area we had visited before – but not to the particular ridge we had in mind.

After leaving Bob’s car, we walked out a short way along a fire road, and then climbed up onto a high point. Here, we inspected a small rock platform that features a few sharpening grooves. Continue reading →

Audley Walk – 27 Jun 2024

I was attending a meeting at Audley, near the National Parks Office in the late afternoon, so, to fill in the day, I caught a train to Loftus, and walked into the Royal National Park, via the road that follows the railway line, then to the NPWS Office, then down the Honeymoon Track to Audley. I then intend to walk upstream seeing what birds were about.

Walking down the Honeymoon Track I saw a number of birds. Continue reading →

Wolli Ck Fungi Update – 26 June 2024

This was another quick visit to Wolli Creek Regional Park to check if any new fungi was present.

I first went upstream to near Paperpark Creek to a spot where I have previously seen waxcaps. I had been hoping that with all the good rain we have been having recently that they may be appearing again. But no sign of the ones I had been waiting for. Continue reading →

Lane Cove River Fungi Update – 25 June 2024

I decided on a visit to the Lane Cove River to document how the Parrot Waxcaps were going.

I walked down to where they are, and soon located one of the ones I had seen on my previous visit six days before. It was the only one of them still intact. The others had either fallen to bits or fallen over. Here it is, and it is looking a bit dry. Continue reading →

Mowlee Ridge Walk – 24 June 2024

This was an interesting walk in Royal National Park, along the Mowlee Ridge, following the Little Marley Firetrail from the Bundeena Road to Little Marley. It was a ridge I have not visited before (except for the bottom section on loop walks from Wattamolla). Once again, the walk was led by Brian Everingham for the National Parks Association of NSW.

In the party was Brian, Terry, Elaine, Sue, Judy, Joan and myself. It was the wrong time of the year to look for orchids in this habitat, so I was on the lookout for birds. Continue reading →
