Birds at Barton Park and Sydney Park – 18 April 2025

I visited two venues to see what birds were around. First Barton Park, where I spent most of my time at Landing Lights Wetland, then caught a bus up to St Peters and visited Sydney Park.

Here is how the trip went.

When I walked down the Spring St Canal at Barton Park, I spotted this Little Black Cormorant – Continue reading

Birds at Nurragingy Reserve – 16 April 2025

Sue joined me for another very good day of bird watching and photography at Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside. This visit, it was a pair of Azure Kingfishers that dominated our day.

I was also fortunate in being able to get some reasonable flight shots.

Canyoning Near the Bell Road – 11 April 2025

Bob was keen on a last canyon of the season, and suggested we head up the Bells Line of Road and visit canyon we had both first visited back in October 2019. The canyon is a short distance from Bells Line of Road and is not that well known. Our earlier visit was just before the terrible bushfires of the 2019/20 summer and conditions then were very dry. This time we found the creek had a fair bit more water, although the canyon is so high up in the catchment that the flow would rarely get high.

We followed an access firetrail for a short way then headed off through thick scrub to the creek. we then followed it down to the first abseil. This is very short, but not long after this is a much larger drop. Continue reading

Birds at Hen and Chicken Bay – 9 April 2025

After the Greenway Bird Survey, I caught a bus to Hen and Chicken Bay at Abbotsford, hoping to see the Bar-tailed Godwits, or at least those that had not yet migrated. The tide was fairly low.

There were still some Godwits, but also some other birds. Here is a Pied Stilt – Continue reading
